Es gibt verschiedene Ansätze zur Klärung der verschiedenen Ebenen oder Funktionen zwischenmenschlicher ‚Nachrichtenübermittlung‘. Der bekannteste ist sicherlich der Ansatz Watzlawicks mit seinen vier pragmatischen Axiomen und den zwei Ebenen der Kommunikation.
Es gibt jedoch noch einige andere Ansätze, von denen hier mindestens zwei erwähnenswert scheinen. Der älteste Ansatz von Bühler unterscheidet „drei Aspekte der Sprache“:
Darstellung, Ausdruck und Appell. Der neueste Ansatz stammt von Friedemann Schulz von Thun und verbindet die beiden älteren Ansätze Bühlers und Watzlawicks. Hierbei verlagert er gleichzeitig den Fokus von der Makro-Ebene (= Kommunikation/Sprache) auf die Mikro-Ebene (= einzelne Nachricht): unterschieden werden „vier Seiten einer Nachricht“ : Sachinhalt, Selbstoffenbarung, Beziehung und Appell.
