Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass eine bestimmte Gesellschaftsform durch eine bestimmte Kulturform gekennzeichnet ist; beide durchdringen und bedingen einander. Eine Kultur legt mit ihren Werten und Weltauffassungen die Grundlage für soziale Normen, Rollen, Traditionen und Verhaltensweisen, sie stellt gewissermaßen eine (legitimierte) Orientierung für ein gesellschaftliches Zusammenleben dar. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es zwangsläufig, dass eine Auseinandersetzung mit Kultur/ Gesellschaft Überlegungen zu den jeweiligen zur Verfügung stehenden (und sich wandelnden) Medien nach sich zieht, denn durch sie vermittelt (und verändert) sich Kultur/ Gesellschaft. So wie Sprache an sich schon Kultur hervorbringt, so begründet jedes neue (Kommunikations-)Medium einen neuen, einzigartigen kulturellen Diskurs und gesellschaftlichen Wandel, denn es stellt neue Denk- und Ausdrucksformen zur Verfügung. Hierbei sei hervorgehoben, dass es »gleichgültig« ist welcher Medien wir uns bedienen (Wort, Buch, Bild, Musik, Uhr, Radio, Fernsehen usw.), stets ist unser Denken und Handeln davon eingefärbt. Mit anderen Worten: unsere Weltauffassung wird durch sie reguliert und kontrolliert, ohne dass wir uns über den dahinter verborgenen Mechanismus, geschweige denn einer etwaigen Denk- und Verhaltensänderung, bewusst sind. Im Großen und Ganzen nehmen wir doch jegliches Medium nur als Gebrauchsgegenstand battle und über seinen Gebrauch bemerken wir nicht, dass wir dafür den Preis einer Wandlung bezahlen. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit den medientheoretischen Überlegungen der Gesellschaftstheorie von Theodor W. Adorno und Jean Baudrillard. Konzeptionell ist die Arbeit in drei Teile gegliedert. Zuerst werden die medientheoretischen Betrachtungen der Kultur-/ Gesellschaftstheorie von Adorno (Teil 1) und Baudrillard (Teil 2) dargestellt, die eine Grundlage für die abschließende Gegenüberstellung (Teil three) liefern.
